Risking missing her appointment with Evan, Lynn stayed to view all the evidence regardless. By the time all the photos and items were laid out on the long conference table and Larry’s team was hard at work cataloguing it all in the little time they were given, a part of her wished she hadn’t stayed. Because there was a mountain of evidence and despite Millhouse’s assurances, most of it was not just from Tonya’s case.

There were photos of five other young women, all wearing pretty summer dresses, all laid in grass clearings, some showing signs of decomp. There were also pieces of jewelry that had presumably belonged to the women and even locks of hair. All of it had been stuffed into a black backpack with many zippers and side pockets. One of Larry’s team was working on collecting fingerprints and other trace evidence from it.

“The backpack is our best bet for finding whatever DNA the owner left behind,” Larry explained as he saw her looking at it. “On the whole, that’s all we can hope for here. Fingerprints and fibers that might tell us something. I haven’t been this restricted in my work in a very long time.”

“I just don’t get Millhouse’s change of heart on this,” TJ mused. “He was cooperating fully until this morning. Now he’s claiming he doesn’t think there’s a serial killer at work? I call bullshit.”

“A cover up?” Lynn asked. “Or is he protecting someone on the inside?”

“Maybe he’s just saving face,” Binna muttered. “He’s been the chief here for five years. Some of these murders occurred on his watch. He strikes me as the type who doesn’t like making mistakes.”

“Makes sense,” TJ said.

“There’s some blood on the zipper,” the tech working on the backpack announced triumphantly, but then his face fell. “What should we do with it?”

“Take a sample,” Larry said. “Cut out the piece and we’ll take it back to our lab for processing. Document everything. I’m done playing these pissing games with the locals.”

Lynn was on the verge of protesting, and she saw a doubtful light cross TJ’s eyes too. But he didn’t say anything about how that might compromise the chain of evidence, so she kept silent too. Bottom line, she fully intended to get a confession and a full story out of this killer. And FBI-presented evidence was rarely called into question besides.

“Oh, I almost forgot,” Larry said, turning to her. “We’ve managed to isolate some DNA from the charm found at Shanna Myers’ crime scene. It’s male.”

That charm was shaped like a teddy bear and had once hung from Lynn’s charm bracelet—one of a pair of friendship bracelets Alicia and she had. Alicia died wearing hers and Lynn’s had disappeared, possibly that same night. To have it appear at a crime scene twenty years later was suspicious. But to find DNA on it was downright miraculous.

“Did you run it against Ryan Connor’s DNA?” Lynn asked, surprised she could even get the words out over the hard lump in her throat.
